Kodansha is one of Japan's largest publishing houses. The company celebrated its centennial in 2009. In 2005 Noma launched Kodansha Beijing Culture Ltd., and in July 2008, Kodansha USA Inc.—enterprises that expand the scope of Kodansha's publishing and international-licensing activities. Though Kodansha's main business is magazine, book, and comic book publishing, the company is also actively involved in film productions and digital publishing.

■Keynote Speech

Hello, I am Yoshinobu Noma. It is my great pleasure to meet you here. I am representative Director of The electronic Book Publishers association of Japan,EBPA-J. I also represent the Japan’s largest publishing company, Kodunsha as President. Kodansha is celebrating its 102nd year and we are aggressively taking part in digital publishing business as well.

Taking this opportunity at this International Conference, I would like to first express my sincere gratitude to all the support provided to Japan from US and the world in connection with Higashi-Nihon Earthquake occurred on March 11. Thank you very much.

I would like to show you an eBook we published on the iPhone and iPad, entitled “3/11 Tsunami Photo Project”. It features photos from 14 globally  well-known photographers including Dominic Nahr of Magnum Photos and was rushed into release on April 14. This is charitable project and thus all the proceed after deducting Apple7s cost will be donated to The Japanese Red Cross Society. The 9.0 magnitude mega earthquake together with a huge Tsunami has taken the lives of 25,000 people. All the scenes from disaster including the victims desperate to survive were captured very vividly in the photos. The eBook has been distributed to 44 countries all around the world and was ranked #1 in all categories of content and in the news in Japan.

I have learned much from this devastating experience. I came to realize the vital potential of eBook and the digital publishing. In the publishing industry, due to disaster, some periodical publications were forced to either cease or postpone releases as many bookstores suffered from the incident and traffic was cut off. As there was no means to physically deliver books, Kodunsha arranged to digitally deliver weekly comic magazines to large audiences over the Internet free of charge. Right now, Japan is paving its way for revival. I would appreciate very much your continued support to Japan.

As mentioned earlier, in addition to Kodunsha, I am also overseeing EBPA-J as Representative Director, which is an association 43 publishers representing Japan on novels and nonfiction books. The purpose of EBPA-J is to promote the eBook market and expand the digital publishing business. I have set forth the following three principles for association.

1, Secure interest and rights of authors.

2, Provide most convenience for readers.

3, Promote coexistence and interconnections between printed books and eBooks.

It is quite amazing to see the rapid growth of eBook market in the US. At the same time, I still think we do not have to make a choice between either printed books or eBooks for the publishing business. In fact it is only good that we have more means to deliver good content to readers through alternative markets.  I believe in the importance of finding and cultivating new talent for fiction/nonfiction materials and comics. The most valuable role of publishers is to expand the capacity of new talent and produce new materials on an ongoing basis. I am convinced that there will be no change in the publishers7 role in this aspect. At EBPA-J, we will assist the digital publishing business to grow and expand with this belief in mind.

The EBPA-J joined the IDPF as a member in December 2010.We sincerely seek unification and standardization of eBook format for the global market. Thus, we have a keen interest in the specifications of EPUB3.

As you may be aware, the Japanese language has unique features such as vertical reading, using different character sets including Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana and rubies to specify kanji reading. There are complicated and distinctive rules for rendering Japanese. Going forward, I would like to see Japanese become part of global standard. We look forward to working with the IDPF to realize the goal.

I honestly hope that all people around the world shall share a common e Book format. I wish and support EPUB to work to build such a foundation for the world and that EPUB and Japanese will work together in a beautiful harmony.

Again, thank you very much for the opportunity to speak to you today. I have no doubt that the IDPF and EBPA-J will work together closely and our collaboration will contribute to progress in the digital publishing business throughout the world.

Thank you.
